In the latest issue of Best Car Magazine, there is a concept rendering of new Mazda Roadster Coupe model that could possibly debut for the 2010 model year. If this car were to go into production, it would not be the first time that Mazda made a coupe out of the Roadster/MX-5. In 2003 Mazda produced a coupe model on the NB Roadster platform. It was produced in very low numbers and was not sold outside of Japan.
The lines of the old Mazda Roadster Coupe (Isn't that weird name?) actually flowed quite well. If the new MX-5 Coupe does make it into production, it would fill the current void of a lightweight, inexpensive rear wheel drive sports coupe. If Mazda does decide to go ahead on this project, let's hope that it is produced in greater numbers than the last one and will be imported to other markets. This car seems like it could be a very viable alternative to the often-rumored though unconfirmed new AE86 and Silvia models. Although the latest MX-5 is not nearly as underpowered as the earlier cars, a small power increase would always be a welcome addition. The thought of a 200hp MX-5 Coupe available at Mazda dealerships should be enough to excite a lot of sports car enthusiasts. We will have to wait and see what comes of this.
Nice snag!
I've been hearing bits and pieces of this rumored car... from what I hear it's a "go", too.
Just wondering if it'll remain a two seater, or if mazda might try to cram some pathetically-small rear seats (think Nissan 2+2) in it for insurance sake if it does come to America.
