Ataka Engineering Lancia Stratos Replica
The Lancia Stratos HF is a car that enthusiasts all over the world have lusted after since its debut in the 1970's. Originally built in as a homologation car for Rally competition, less than 500 models were sold worldwide. The Stratos was designed from the ground up as a rally car and with its exotic looks and Ferrari Dino-sourced V6 it became an instant classic.
Naturally, with its extremely low production numbers and exotic car status , all of the original cars are in the hands of collectors and are far out the price range of just about any car enthusiast. Fortunately for Stratos fans there have been a number of different replicas and kit car versions produced over the years.
The latest comes from a company named Ataka Engineering who has collaborated with Hawk Cars in the UK. Located in Saitama prefecture just outside of Tokyo, Ataka makes a replica that is one of the most complete versions ever been produced.
Known as the HFR2000 TypeII, the car does a great job of capturing the look and feel of the original even if it is not a 100% accurate replica. It has all of the race-car derived characteristics of the original like the wrap-around windshield and one-piece lifting front and rear cowls.
Underneath the body there is double wishbone suspension at all four corners and combined with the short wheelbase it gives the HFR2000 quick response and sharp handling.
The power is supplied not by an Italian V6 but from a Toyota SW20 MR2 3SGTE turbo engine. With output of over 200 horsepower and a weight of less than 2000lbs, the HFR2000 Type II is a very capable performer.
Starting off at about $46,000 for the basic version, the cars are not cheap but are still far more affordable and easier to maintain than the original. There are a number of options available, whether you want the added comfort of power windows and air conditioning or the added performance of Brembo F50 brakes. Ataka also offers parts to convert the exterior from the street version to the famous rally version.
This example is a full rally replica done in the classic Alitalia racing livery. The front quad fog light kit is also an option from Ataka.
Of course if all that is not enough for you Ataka has a new model coming out this spring.
The HFR3200 will feature full carbon front and rear cowls for even less weight, and power will be supplied by a Honda NSX 3.2L DOHC V6 pushing close to 300 horsepower. The car will also feature race tuned suspension and Brembo brakes. Although it will be priced at around $150,000, it is sure to be one of the most unique performance cars anywhere, and the NSX engine and featherlight weight should give it supercar-like performance. Test drive anyone?
I don't think there are too many red-blooded car enthusiasts who won't appreciate what Ataka Engineering has done with the original Lancia Stratos concept. Take a look at Ataka's website for more information about the various models and options available. They even have some videos that show the cars in action. Wouldn't it be something to show up to your next local car meet in one of these?
